Vishu – Malayalam New Year Greetings

It’s Vishu Malayalam New Year , I wish (വിഷു ആശംസകള്‍) Vishu Greetings to all Mallu’s across the Globe.
Keralites celebrate the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam as Vishu. They believe the fortune of the year depends upon the first thing they see in the morning on the Vishu Day. To make sure they see auspicious thing on the Vishu day they prepare a ‘Kani’ on the previous day.The Kani generally contains raw rice, fresh linen, golden cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, the yellow flowers konna (Cassia fistula), and a holy text and coins, in a bell metal vessel called uruli. A lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed alongside.This Vishu Kani (വിഷുക്കണി) will be the first thing they will watch on the day of Vishu.

Vishu is celebrated by 350 Million keralites in India and several thousand mallu’s world wide.

Vishu in Sanskrit means Equal. This is just not a Hindu festival. It is a New year for the state. Vishu is celebrated with more enthusiam and vigour in all parts of Kerala and by malayalees through out the world..

The elders of the family distribute money to the children and their dependants on the day of Vishu. This custom is called Vishu Kaineetam (വിഷു കൈനീട്ടം ).The same day is celebated as Bihu is Assam , Baishaki in Punjab and Tamil Puthandu in Tamil Nadu.

Kerala has a typical individuality amongst other states.It is called Gods own Country. It is the only state were the literacy percent is high. It has the most International Airport than in any state in India. Women population is higher than men.
